Biography

Orville Carroll was considered a “youngster” in the Wonderland Way Club, starting out as a high school student from New Albany High School. While a student at the Louisville Art Center, Orville Carroll was recognized by Adele Brandeis, who directed the WPA Federal Art Project. Under Brandeis' sponsorship, Carroll became an accomplished muralist landing commissions in Kentucky, Indiana and Missouri. Carroll lived among the few remaining Shaker town inhabitants, where his work was accepted as an alternative to banned photography.

During the Great Depression, Carroll’s work was showcased, thanks to the WPA project, in local federal buildings, especially post offices.

In 1956 Carroll opened his own framing shop, and many pictures in the area bear the Carroll frame-shop label.
